Scottish Autism

Enabling people living with autism in Scotland through the whole life journey

Day & Vocational Opportunities

Here to help individuals realise their full potential.

“Scottish Autism is delighted to be partnering with Queen Margaret University.”

Scottish Autism offers day support to individuals within our Autism Resource Centre based in Musselburgh. Individuals are supported by staff who are trained to understand an individual’s needs and how to maximise their potential and help them enjoy new experiences.

Within the Autism Resource Centre a Communication Base has been
created to support individuals to develop sustainable and effective communication.  Staff are trained to help develop a variety of communication systems.  A number of specialist interest groups are currently operational within the Autism Resource Centre. These include music, cooking, art and visiting places of interest.

Each individual who receives support is encouraged to maximise their independent living skills through use of the large kitchen area. Detailed support plans, with clearly identified outcomes, are created for each activity or skill the individual is working to develop.

Individuals who attend the Autism Resource Centre have the opportunity to achieve recognised qualifications through the Borders College Accreditation Programme. The Centre has also established an excellent relationship with Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.

Vocational Services

Partnership Working

Scottish Autism is committed to working in partnership with other organisations and have been successful in creating an effective partnership with Queen Margaret University to offer student placements with the Autism Resource Centre Musselburgh.

Not only do students benefit from placement experience but individuals who receive support at the Autism Resource Centre have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Music Therapy – group and 1:1 sessions
  • Art Therapy – group and 1:1 sessions
  • Dance and Movement – group sessions

Each student sets clear outcomes for the individuals who receives their input.

2010/2011 has provided individuals with a unique opportunity to attend music therapy sessions at Queen Margaret University. Scottish Autism has been selected as the preferred organisation to pilot the use of University facilities.  Individuals have commented that they have enjoyed going to the University as this offers a new experience with access to a variety of musical equipment.
