New Struan School

Help us offer autistic children beneficial creative and therapy sessions

Opened in 2005, the current bespoke-built premises for New Struan School, our independent residential and day school for autistic children, supports 18 individuals between the ages of 8 and 19 years old. The team hopes to enhance the facilities on offer at the school by providing valuable areas where pupils can be supported to gain important life skills.

Creative and Therapy Sessions

New Struan School pupils are currently being provided with beneficial drama sessions, animation and Rebound Therapy sessions on a trampoline. Watch our video to find out more!

Rebound therapy sessions take place twice a week, with a trained therapist. The sessions focus on sensory and social outcomes, giving a safe space for pupils to experience the sensations that come with being on a trampoline and engaging with their instructor. Muscle tone and positive health and wellbeing are amongst some of the benefits.

Weekly animation sessions provide opportunities for our school pupils to develop skills for particular areas of the curriculum, like literacy and numeracy. These sessions provide a really rich experience, with some children being particularly skilled in animation which they may be able to pursue as a career later in life.

The creative nature of animation encourages use of imagination and by working one on one with the animator from Square Peg, communications skills can be developed.

Weekly drama sessions are also extremely popular with the school children and allow flexibility for each pupil; some attend for only a short period of time, while others attend and do not participate but still enjoy watching the interactions with everyone involved. The sessions are helpful in enabling interaction and improving communication skills, whilst encouraging use of imagination with the stories and scenarios presented by the drama teacher.

All pupils at the school are able to take part in these sessions regardless of ability as adjustments are made to each individual’s care plan.

The team at New Struan School are very keen for these therapy and creative sessions to continue due to the huge benefits that are evident outside of the sessions. Pupils are showing increased confidence, interaction, communication and calmness in daily classes, aiding their learning within the school environment.

We hope to raise £30,000 to cover the annual cost of these invaluable creative and therapy sessions for the young people at New Struan School. Will you show your support? Please get involved by donating or taking part in your own fundraising activity for New Struan School.

Lucy Chetty, Head Teacher at New Struan School says,

Through receiving kind donations, we are also able to fund an animator to work with the young people at the school. This is an area of huge enjoyment for many of the pupils and potentially an area they might like to explore as a meaningful career. Our animator is able to understand how to develop the ideas of the young person and bring their thoughts to life through moving animation. The pride the young people take in these amazing achievements helps to develop their confidence and self-belief.
