About Family Flourish
Family Flourish is delivered as part of Our Minds Matter to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of children and young people in Fife by identifying practical tools to meet individual needs.
Within the Family Flourish service there are two elements to the service:
Whole Family Support
Through our Whole Family Support, we deliver combined parent and young person sessions for families whose children are aged 8-15 years and have a neurodevelopmental difference ( including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia).
A diagnosis is not required to access this support.
The aim of the sessions is to provide in person, 1:1 support to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of young people based on identified personal goals by the family.
The wider aims
- To provide a safe and supportive environment at the One Stop Shop to foster discussions and enhance self-awareness.
- Together, promote mental health and wellbeing strategies for young people.
- To support parents and carers to feel more empowered and knowledgeable when supporting their young person’s mental and emotional wellbeing needs.
- To work collaboratively to enhance communication between parent/carer and young person
- To support wider family relationships.
Accessing the service
- Both parent/carer and young person must be happy to take part in the service.
- The young person must be aged between 8-15 years old.
- The young person must have either a formal diagnosis or self identify/suspect a neurodevelopmental difference.
- The young person must be enrolled in a Fife Council School.
- The young person’s mental health support needs have changed suddenly or have escalated and are impacting on family relationships and overall family wellbeing.
- The young person should not be receiving support from CAMHS or any other Our Minds Matter Partner such as Dapl, Includem or Venture Trust at this time or within 3 months of their support ending.
How does the service work?
Either parents, young people aged 12+ or educational professionals (with family consent) can make an initial enquiry.
After an initial enquiry is made and there is agreement that the young person and family are eligible for the service, a Welcome session is arranged with an advisor to meet with the parent/carer and young person to ensure that the young person is still happy to take part. Should the young person feel that this is not a good option for them, parents can still access our separate drop-in support which is detailed further down.
Following the Welcome session, the parent/carer and young person will be offered dates for 6 sessions. There may be a delay in starting these sessions if a specific day and time is required. This will be discussed with families at the Welcome session.
The Whole Family Support takes place over 6 sessions lasting approximately 1 hour and taking place fortnightly from the start date. Each session works towards the personalised identified goals for those taking part. The parent/carer and young person will stay together during the first and sixth session and there will be an evaluation completed during these initial and final sessions to track progression towards identified goals and service aims.
Once all 6 sessions are completed, a follow up session is offered 3 months after the sixth session, this is so we can check in with families and provide an opportunity to reflect on the previous three months.
Support for Parents/Carers
Drop-In support is available to parents/carers of a child/young person with a neurodevelopmental difference aged 5-15 years where the young person does not meet the criteria for our Whole Family Support sessions. Again, a formal diagnosis is not required to access this support.
How do the Drop-Ins work?
Drop-In Sessions
An advisor will be available within our Drop-In Sessions held on a weekly basis at the One Stop Shop. These sessions can be to discuss strategies and tools to support your child/young person’s wellbeing. This is an ad hoc support for parents to discuss a key mental and emotional wellbeing aspect in relation to their child.
Advice Drop-In slots are held at our office at New Volunteer House in Kirkcaldy as follows:
- Tuesdays at 9.30am – 12.30pm
- Thursdays at 1pm – 4pm
Social Drop-Ins
Dunfermline Social Drop-In
Our Dunfermline Social Drop-In is a relaxed, safe space to ask questions and seek 1:1 advice. Our Community Advisors will be on hand for a chat about anything you would like to discuss. There is no need to register to attend; just drop in at any time during the session. Please note there could be a short wait time if our advisor is already speaking with someone when you arrive.
These drop-ins are held on the first Monday of each month and the location alternates between Gillespie Centre Open House Cafe, 14 Chapel Street, Dunfermline, KY12 7AW and Touch Trust, St Margaret’s Community Church, Dunfermline, KY11 4JJ. Cupar Social Drop-In
Our Cupar Social Drop-In is a relaxed, safe space to ask questions and seek 1:1 advice. Our Community Advisors will be on hand for a chat about anything you would like to discuss. There is no need to register to attend; just drop in at any time during the session. Please note there could be a short wait time if our advisor is already speaking with someone when you arrive.
These drop-ins are held on the third Monday of each month at YMCA YWCA Cupar, Marathon House, 93 Bonnygate, Cupar, KY15 4LG.
