What is Get Set 4 Autism?

Get Set 4 Autism is a programme of support for parents and carers of autistic children and young people aged 5–18 who live in Scotland.

The programme is available for both pre and post assessment, whether a child has a diagnosis or is currently on a waitlist for an assessment in relation to autism.

Whilst children and young people are not supported directly through the programme, Get Set 4 Autism takes a family‑centred approach by working with parents and carers, supporting them to feel confident, informed, and equipped to meet their child’s needs

The overarching aim of Get Set 4 Autism is to promote greater understanding of autism; improve communication between parents and professionals and ultimately equip parents/carers with the information and practical skills they need to enable them to better support their child/young person moving forward.

What can parents/carers expect?

Parents/carers will work onetoone with a Community Advisor over four fortnightly sessions spanning no more than 12 weeks, delivered by phone or video call. Together, exploring 3-5 goals, supporting areas that matter most. Community Advisors will provide tailored advice, practical strategies, and signposting to helpful services and resources.

Get Set 4 Autism is needsbased rather than diagnosisbased. Scottish Autism’s Community Advisors do not provide diagnostic opinions but focus on understanding the child’s current needs and supporting parents/carers to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Who Can Take Part?

  • Parent/carers who are the primary care giver of an autistic child or young person aged 5–18
  • Parent/carers who live in Scotland
  • Parent/carers whose child or young person has an autism diagnosis or is currently on a waitlist for an assessment relating to autism

Accessing the Programme

All parents/carers begin with an initial triage call with a Community Advisor. This helps to:

  • Check eligibility
  • Understand the parent/carer’s current situation
  • Identify areas of support
  • Complete the enquiry process

Parents/carers who meet the criteria are placed on a waitlist until a Community Advisor is available to start your Get Set 4 Autism sessions.

If the programme is not the right fit at that time, parents/carers are still supported through:

  • Online resources
  • Signposting to other appropriate services

“The support we received was probably the most valuable we have had in our journey so far. The advisor was highly knowledgeable, patient, an excellent listener, empathetic and understanding. She gave us loads of ideas of how to better support our whole family and she also gave us hope for the future. We cannot thank her enough and would highly recommend the programme to anyone with a new diagnosis.”
