Butterscotch text on blue background which says Scottish Autism response to Additional Support for Learning Review

Today has seen the publication of the Scottish Government’s Additional Support for Learning Review.

The review makes six key recommendations for national planning and staged intervention, workforce alignment, early intervention capacity, national visibility of need, progress and impact, a national delivery model for ASL and embedding ASL in curriculum design, delivery and assessment.

We welcome the findings of this review. We know from the people who are speaking to our advice services that the system needs to be changed. Our manifesto for the 2026 elections calls for better support for autistic learners, part of which is upskilling of the workforce and providing the support to teachers and frontline staff that they need.

We hope that this review, which is the latest of many, will help the next Scottish Government and Parliament to start to address the inequities which continue to exist in our education system and close the gap for the young learners who are at risk of being left behind.
