Celebrating Science

At the beginning of assembly this week, Sam let everyone know that tomorrow will officially be the first day of Spring. Hopefully this means that it will start to get warmer, and we won’t have any more snow!

We then talked about our Right for this week, which is:

‘You have the right to look for, get and share information’

We will therefore be looking this week at what information we would like to share with others.

We started ‘Look, Listen’ this week by discussing some of the activities we had gotten up to during science week. Lucy announced that we have applied for and received a ‘Hot Ticket to the Sun’ from NASA. In summer, the Parker Solar Probe will be launched on its journey to the sun and our name will be written on a microchip that will be sent with it.

We also took a look at Cameron’s snow experiment that he conducted with Alison. He really enjoyed watching the snow melt into a liquid. Other pupils have also enjoyed using the snow to freeze things as part of their experiments.

We also had some exciting news from Danny. Over the weekend, he spotted the car from Back to the Future while driving with his dad. So, of course, they stopped to take pictures!

At the weekend also George visited Kidston park, and Adam enjoyed bouncing around at Rebound Therapy.

Over the past week we have also had some great examples of our pupils being helpful and respectful. Jack helped out by hovering in Ash class every day, and David helped David get his socks on in the flat!

Jason then gave us some exciting news. His book, Torrential: Among Us, is now available for purchase on Amazon via their Kindle store! I can be purchased for just £2 here: http://amzn.to/2HNmgaB

We then moved on to our News section presented by Jack. He started by providing us with some science themed updates following British Science Week. During the past week, Birch class have been looking at the internet and cyber security, and Jack had made a poster for this. He also announced that sadly Professor Stephen Hawking died during the week at 76 years old.

In sporting news, Jack shared with us that golfer Rory McIlroy won the Arnold Palmer Invitational- his first victory since 2016!

The last big piece of news was an announcement on the latest school shooting in America and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. In the shooting, 17 people lost their lives. Jack told us how these shootings had become a part of daily life in America, and were soon forgotten about. This time however, things were different as the students have banded together to protest against gun violence, which is a brave step many others have been unable to take.

Our news section this week ended with Jack’s tweet of the week, which was:

‘I’m so angry right now that I could strategically throw my phone at a safe spot on the couch’

Our news this week was followed by a special song by our music therapy teacher, Janet.  Everyone  stood up to take part in the song and enjoyed joining in.

This was followed by Jack singing the song ‘Paper Planes’, as a touching tribute to the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Lucy then showed us our Sign of the Week, which is ‘art’.

Our Star Awards this week are:

  • Class of the Week goes to Pine class for accumulating the most points over the week
  • Our Finer Diners this week are Caroline, Sharon and David for working on our skill this month of scraping their plates
  • Our Rights Respecting Award goes to April for enjoying our first Project Ability session

Our surprise song this week was chosen by Adam, and we all danced and sang along to ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams.

To end our assembly this week, Danny shared with us his digger hat, which he received as a present from Colin, his taxi driver.  He also showed us his book on planes, and showed everyone one of his favourite images of a sea plane.
