Digital Eagles Come to New Struan
We were very excited to welcome Digital Eagles, Lulu and Anna to our school this week to tell us about coding.
Did you know that computer code runs our world? The Digital Eagles explained, “Coding is the language that we use to talk to computers and tell them what to do. It drives the software in every computer, gaming device, phone and camera, but you’ll find it in everyday household appliances too, from washing machines to the new ‘smart’ thermostats.” It is a hidden but vital part of our everyday life and in the future it’s something that will be an important part of lots of jobs.
Lulu and Anna work for Barclay’s and on a voluntary basis they go round schools teaching staff and pupils about coding. They started off showing Teachers Caroline and Jamie how to use the free coding application on Barclay’s website. This involves using computer instructions to manipulate and instruct characters on screen, for example changing the music, the size of the animations and how fast they move.
The idea behind training our Teachers first is that Caroline and Jamie will be able to show other Teachers how coding works so they can support pupils’ learning in this area.
After familiarising themselves with coding, a workshop was set up with four eager pupils: Keidis, Sam, Scott and Alfie.
Pupils also enjoyed learning about coding using minecraft. It didn’t take long for them to get the hang of it and it will be great for our other pupils to learn about it too!
Pupils had a brilliant morning learning about coding and we’d like to say a huge thank you to Lulu and Anna. If you are interested in the coding workshops they run for children, you can find out more by visiting the Barclay's website.
