A Garden Makeover

We had the pleasure of having depute head teacher Deborah lead our first assembly back from our May holiday. She started by telling us about what Marley had gotten up to during the week off. As Deborah went away on holiday, Marley got to stay at her gran’s where she was completely spoiled! She was allowed to lay on the couch and the bed, so Deborah had to train her again not to do that when she came home.

We also looked at what our new rabbit, Freddie, got up to over the holiday. He watched the Royal wedding, spent some time in the garden enjoying the sun and even tried to escape at one point by slipping out of his lead. Freddie also has his own twitter account where you can follow his adventures: https://twitter.com/FreddieStruan

We then looked at our Right of the Month, which is:

‘You have the right to choose friends and join groups’

Over the course of the month we will be looking at setting up some groups within the school, such as a running group and an eco-group. We are also going to put together a gardening group which will focus on improving our garden, taking out the weeds and planting some flowers and herbs. Deborah brought in a couple of plants that she bought and let us smell one of the herbs, which we guessed correctly as being mint.

We started ‘Look, Listen’ today with a song from Jack. He sang for us the song ‘Solo’ by Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato.

This was followed by our news presentation by Jack and Jason. Before they started the news, they gave us some updates on the format of the news section. This includes the introduction of a ‘Tip of the Week’ section and a music story each week. The first story this week was about WHSmith and how a recent survey has shown them to be voted as the UKs worst high street shop. In the survey, customer complained about expensive and out of date products, as well as poor customer service.  Jack then spoke about GDPR, which came into effect on Friday. This was particularly relevant following our talks on staying safe online from last week. Lots of organisations now have to make sure that they follow the rules of GDPR when processing the data of any EU residents.

Our very first Tip of Week from our news section is:

‘Try your best. Not everyone can get all A’s, so it’s important to give it your all. As long as you know it’s your best, then you’re giving it all you’ve got.’

In our first music news feature, Jason updated us on his music, which he creates under the name 'Asendo'. He is hoping to be able to release his album, 'Better Than Life II' on June 9th. He has released his latest track of this album, which can be listened to here: https://soundcloud.com/jason-davidson-skyfall/laung-gawacha-asendo-remix

To end our news desk section this week Jack gave us his Tweet of the Week:

‘If it only takes 10,000 hours to master a skill why am I still so bad at sleeping?’

Following the news section, Jack and Jason gave us an update on what they had gotten up to during the holiday. Jason has bought himself a new laptop and Jack went away to Spain for the week.

Following this we practiced some new signs along to the song ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong which felt very fitting for such a lovely day. Danny then shared with us a page from his Thunderbirds book.

Our Focus of the Week is to be responsible, which will include looking after and tidying our work spaces.

Our Sign this week is ‘garden’ so we will have a lot of practice using this as we look towards setting up our gardening group.

Our Star Awards this week are:

  • Class of the Week: Ash class, who earned 80 points in the week before the holiday.
  • Our new Star Baker award goes to Ben for the delicious donuts he made for us

We also had three John Muir awards to give out at assembly today. These went to Erin, Jamie and Adam. Jamie then spoke to us about his experience at Greenroutes in Gartmore in relation to the award.

Our assembly ended this week with everyone dancing along to the song ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5, which was chosen by Ash class.
