Outdoor Education Day
Last week pupils took part in the first ever Outdoor Education Day to take place at New Struan School.
Through the use of social stories and symbols, pupils have been preparing for the Outdoor Education Day for several weeks. It started off with each class setting out their chairs on the grass in a semi circle. Photos of the pupils were then attached to the chairs. Sean did a great job of helping with this!
Once all the pupils had taken their seat, Susanne welcomed everyone and we all sang the ‘Fred the Moose’ song and the ‘Princess Pat’ song.
Everyone then went to work on the first activity which was for each class to build a camp. Working in their class teams the pupils had to organise themselves and make sure that each team member had a part to play in building the camp.
Ben and Scott were responsible for putting the poles together
All classes did an amazing job of building their camp which required skill, team work and dedication from each pupil.
After all the hard work, pupils collected some food and enjoyed a well deserved rest and lunch in their hideouts. After the break it was back to work with each group tasked with creating their own flag.
Anna put up some lovely bunting around their camp and Jack was inspired by Jim Henson the creator of The Muppets and included this on their team flag
The rain stayed away long enough for everyone to gather once more to sing some songs and for each class to collect their certificate. The day was a great success with pupils enjoying being out in the sun and working together. Pupils coped remarkably well with the change in routine and it is hoped we will have more outdoor learning days in the future.
