A Glasgow care home is getting into the Christmas spirit and has presented a cheque for £1000 to a national autism charity.

Each year, care provider Meallmore sends electronic Christmas cards in lieu of paper ones in order to donate the money saved to a charity selected by one of its care homes.

This Christmas, The Oaks care home, in Baillieston, chose to donate the funds to Scottish Autism in support of the life -enriching work it provides. The care home offers residential care and specialises in helping vulnerable adults, so this charity is particularly close to the hearts of staff, residents and their families.

Laura McNicol, Deputy Manager of The Oaks, and Karen Macdonald, Meallmore Learning & Development Manager along with The Oaks residents, presented the £1000 cheque to Scottish Autism Corporate Fundraiser, Fran Miele.

Commenting on the donation, Karen said: “We’re so pleased to have been able to donate these funds to such a worthy charity, especially at such a festive time of year.

“Like Scottish Autism, our goal at The Oaks is to care for individuals who need extra help and support to maximise their independence, quality of life and social skills. We hope this will help support the amazing work carried out by the charity for the New Year.” 

The Oaks offer residential care services for up to 32 people with mental health problems. The home specialises in helping vulnerable adults, aged between 18 and 65, rebuild the confidence and life skills they need to lead as independent lives as possible. Typically, the home cares for residents living with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, alcohol related dementia, and acquired brain injuries.

Scottish Autism, which this year celebrated its 50th anniversary, is the largest provider of autism-specific services in Scotland and a leading authority and advocate for good autism practice. The charity offer a large range of services and support for autistic people including education, day and vocational opportunities, supported living, outreach, respite and specialist transition support.
