‘A is for Autism’ launched for World Autism Awareness Month 2016
Following on from the success of last year, we are encouraging everyone to make this year’s 'A is for Autism' campaign even better by getting involved and helping mark World Autism Day (Saturday 2 April). All you need to do is make a letter ‘A’ shape, take a photo and share it on Facebook or email the photo to us. All the pictures will be shared in an album on our Facebook page and the one with the most ‘likes’ will win a prize at the end of the month.
We are also encouraging people to get involved in events happening all over Scotland during April to help raise awareness and understanding of autism, which is a lifelong, developmental condition that affects 1 in 100 people. Pamper Nights, Golf Days and a host of fun things are organised along with lots of activities through which people can raise money by taking part in, such as The Kiltwalk and Callander Cycle Challenge.
Karen Wilson, Fundraising Manager, said; “Most people know someone who is affected by autism and understand how challenging this condition can be for the whole family to live with. We are therefore encouraging everyone to get involved in Autism Awareness Month to help us reach as many people as possible to raise awareness and understanding of autism. Why not organise a coffee morning in your local community or a bingo night with your friends? Or get your family involved in our ‘A is for Autism’ campaign, which captured the imagination of hundreds of people last year!”
Karen continued; “We were overwhelmed with people sending in fabulous ‘A’ shapes fashioned out of Lego, toy cars, people doing gymnastic shapes and even football teams! It’s a great opportunity for families, schools and clubs to get together and be creative, whilst also celebrating World Autism Awareness Day. Once you have sent us your ‘A’ you can donate £2 to help us continue to provide vital support to individuals with autism and their families by texting AUTT16 £2 to 70070. Tell your friends and family to get involved and do the same!”
Whether you are at home with your family, in a school, local service or company, everyone can get involved and raise awareness about autism! There is no better time in the year to raise awareness and make a difference to the lives of individuals with autism and their families - so why not join in?
World Autism Day marks the start of the eighth ‘World Autism Month’ during April, when autism organisations around the world celebrate with unique awareness raising campaigns.
