Celebrating our 50th Anniversary at the Scottish Parliament

Last Tuesday December 4, we celebrated our past, present and future at a reception held at The Scottish Parliament. The event was the last of our anniversary celebrations as we come to the end of our 50th year.

At the reception we were joined by autistic individuals we support and their families, colleagues and friends, as well as a number of MSP’s.

We were delighted to have in attendance Iceberg Productions, a group of young autistic filmmakers, supported in our services, as well as Olga Fraser, a member of the group of parents who founded our organisation in 1968.

The reception was kindly sponsored by Annie Wells MSP, who provided a warm welcome to our guests, speaking about her memories of visiting our services and purchasing a cushion from our day and vocational service in Alloa, Art Opportunities.

We were also grateful to have Clare Haughey MSP Minister for Mental Health in attendance to provide a keynote address. In her speech, she shared some of the history of Scottish Autism, as well as our progress over the past 50 years and establishing ourselves as a leading provider of autism services and a leading authority and advocate for good autism practice.

This was followed by a speech from our Deputy Chief Executive Charlene Tait. Charlene reiterated the importance of innovative autism practice and the significance of our 50th year.  During her speech she shared a video made by Iceberg Productions, a group of young autistic film makers, supported by Scottish Autism. The film group were invited to the stage, and one of the members, Jason, spoke about his experience of being part of the film group and creating a film that documented what Scottish Autism’s mission statement means to them.

What a wonderful way to celebrate Scottish Autism’s past, present and future!
