Christmas appeal aims to create more ‘light-bulb’ moments for families with autism

The Christmas appeal will raise funds for our Autism Advice Line, which provides practical help and emotional support to hundreds of individuals with autism and their families. The Advice Line is run by a team of dedicated advisors who are committed to helping people find the right support, be it during one phone call or a series of calls over many months.

Autism Advice Line Advisor, Katie Graves, explains: “I enjoy hearing the ‘light-bulb’ moments you can give people with small pieces of advice which they hadn’t thought of and the relief that brings to them. You take for granted the amount you know as an advisor but a small nugget of information can change the way people look at things and help them realise that they are not alone. Some callers can feel hopeless and at the end of their tether - we can help them by suggesting other avenues they can try in overcoming a particular challenge.”

Charlene Tait, Director of Development at Scottish Autism said: “The Autism Advice Line provides accessible and helpful advice and information to individuals with autism and their families when they need it most. Whether it is signposting to particular services, information on getting a diagnosis or just someone to talk to who understands, we have someone here who can help.

“We rely on the generosity of the general public, along with donations from trusts and organisations to maintain this valuable resource. This year’s Christmas campaign is seeking further support for the Advice Line so we can continue to reach out and provide help and advice. It typically costs around £4 to support a family over the course of a month so even a modest donation can have a significant impact in providing support.”

The Advice Line is funded by generous donations. It typically costs around £4 to help a family over the course of a month. By giving just £4 you can help them give even more families in search of answers that light-bulb moment. You can send a cheque made payable to ’Scottish Autism’ or make a donation online. With your support the Autism Advice Line can continue to be a source of help and understanding to those who may be isolated, frustrated or struggling.
