Gartinny to the Rescue
Hawkhill Community Centre manager, May Richmond collects the new plants from Stuart Mitchell at Gartinny Nursery
The allotments at Hawkhill were torn apart by vandals who cut off the tops of vegetables and pulled other plants out completely. Hawkhill’s Man Up group had put in a huge amount of work growing the vegetables and plants for the benefit of the community and were saddened by what had happened.
Following the incident Hawkhill Community Centre contacted our Gartinny Nursery who immediately gathered together various new plants for the allotment including cabbage, tomatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, and provided these completely free of charge.
While the vandalism left the community group disheartened they were delighted by the response offered by Gartinny and are well on the way to rebuilding their allotment. We are very proud of Gartinny for their community spirit and kind gesture.
Stuart Mitchell, autism practitioner at Gartinny, said “We are trying to encourage people to grow their own plants and also we are trying to get involved and help out any community projects we can. We wish them all the best”
Gartinny Nursery also recently held their annual plant sale on Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June raising a fantastic £7,500.
