Fife at the Fringe
The drama, entitled The Tree and the Abbey, features actors with an autism spectrum disorder between the ages of 17 and 40 in all key roles with our staff members taking on supporting roles.
The play is being staged in an afternoon and evening performance at the Lauriston Hall, Edinburgh on 15 Aug and is the first of its kind to feature at the Fringe.
The Tree and the Abbey is a social history of Fife with a high level of artistic licence. The play features a wide range of characters from the community and revitalises a number of tragic and enriching events which have either been forgotten or are simply unknown.
The play was written by Scott Daly, a Fife-based practitioner who will also direct the Fringe production. Scott, who has worked for us for the past seven years, runs a communication group using drama as an effective means of encouraging and enhancing expression. He has also set up art workshops where all the props and scenery for the play have been produced.
Commenting on the play, Scott said: “The Tree and the Abbey celebrates and acknowledges the determination, eventfulness and all the humanity of the people in Fife, seen in the face of adversity, calamity, tears and laughter.
I’m really delighted that all those involved in this production will have the experience of performing it in this year’s Fringe Festival. The input from our cast is what really makes this play work so well with each of them giving a piece of themselves in their performance. It all amounts to a really unique piece of theatre.”
