I am Autistic and Proud of it - Emma's Blog March 2017

Emma Stanley

Hi, I am Emma and welcome to my monthly blog. I am on the autism spectrum and was diagnosed in the year 2000 at 25 years old. I was born in England and in the 80’s I moved from England to Scotland because my dad got promoted. I am writing this blog because I feel there is not enough for women with autism, and I just want other women to know they are not alone and that anything is possible. I found it very hard at first when I was diagnosed but now I know that it is a part of me and that I am stuck with it. I am trying to be supportive of other women with autism, the men will get a mention but this blog is mostly for women with autism. Each month I will talk about, well anything goes, but mostly issues affecting women with autism and things I am interested in – the “b” word for buses and the “t” word for trains are banned from this blog!

I am an autistic woman and sports mad

I am a sports fan especially the pars and Scotland rugby team because my gran was born in Edinburgh. At the moment, I can’t go to the pars home games because the crowd is too big, although we don’t have the biggest crowds in the country. I get overwhelmed and anxious in big crowds. I can cope as long as I am with someone who can reassure me. This is where my Scottish Autism staff come in and are very handy as they know how to support me.

I would love for the pars to set up a box for people with autism because I have watched a programme about a little boy who is autistic and he got his own box. This could be a safe space for people with autism. I am not sure if they would do this mind you. At the moment I can’t go to a football match as it is too overcrowded and I would love to see my favourite team, the pars.

The Scottish rugby teams, both the women and the men’s, have done well especially the men for coming from behind. I forgot the score! I would love to go to a Scotland vs England game at Murrayfield but I cannot afford it at the moment, I am not looking for free tickets mind you! The English are at Murrayfield next year and I always love to watch the England vs Scotland matches, I will be glued to it next week, I have an England rugby cap and will be wearing my Scotland jersey and sitting on the fence for who I want to win.
