Founders House Opens in Alloa
In July we were delighted to launch our new residential service in Alloa, Founders House. The name of this service was chosen to honour the parents who founded Scottish Autism in 1968. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary year, we were fortunate to have two of our founding parents, Jessie Milligan and Olga Fraser, to officially open the service and cut the ribbon.
Founders House provides accommodation for up to nine autistic adults and include six self-contained flats, all with en-suite facilities. It is all on one level with private accommodation and communal social areas. Enlarged door openings and en-suite shower rooms are just some of the adaptations we have made. There is also a large mature garden which has been transformed so that it can be used by all residents.
As the individuals we support get older, their needs change over time and additional health and mobility issues add new challenges. The aim of this new service is to provide accommodation which meets the specific care needs of autistic adults who may live with other health-related issues such as arthritis, limited mobility and sight loss.
One of our supported individuals will benefit greatly from the new service as one of our Autism Practitioners, explains:
“He loves activity and a busy social setting and the communal area within the new service will give him the opportunity to socialise with other people.
“He also enjoys going to the local shops and visiting the local cafes for lunch. These are close to the new service, reducing his reliance on public transport and allowing him the choice to walk if he desires, assisting with his mobility."
