Thistles Day Service

Help enhance our day service in Maryhill

We are seeking contributions towards the upgrade of the sensory room at our Thistles Day Service in Maryhill for autistic adults. Arguably the most important room within the service, Thistle’s are hoping to raise £4,430 to support with the costs of sensory equipment for it. It is key that we have a calming and comfortable space for our supported people to relax and self-regulate in. Just now, the sensory room is tired and in much need of new equipment. This room would benefit the everyday wellbeing of 9 autistic adults in total, as well as the staff at this service.

Thistle’s Day Opportunity service is an innovative service based in Maryhill, Glasgow. It provides a variety of centre-based and community opportunities for people which are flexible, meaningful and designed to promote the choices, preferences and aspirations of each person. The service has been specifically designed around the needs of autistic people.

The Need

Sensory rooms are vital to our day opportunity services. It is important that we have a calming, soothing and comfortable space for all our supported people to relax in. We need our services to feel as safe and supporting as possible for our people.

Sensory equipment helps people with their everyday lives, tasks and helps to stimulate the senses of our people, both physically and mentally. Sensory rooms can be a haven for autistic people.

The chosen sensory equipment will help our supported people to engage in self-soothing activities helping them to feel calm and happy. The nature of sensory equipment also helps people figure out their likes and dislikes when it comes to sound, motion and colour - they are used often to keep people calm, especially after any stressful events or outbursts. For example, we want to purchase a vibroacoustic plinth and speakers – something that relaxes the whole body on a low frequency sound wave. Our supported people will be able to lie or sit on it and self-regulate and relax on their own terms. All items have been carefully considered to stimulate senses and boost mental health and wellbeing.

Outputs and Outcomes

A sensory room can have a very powerful impact on a person’s everyday mental health and wellbeing. As a result of this, this can also help strengthen confidence and relationships with staff, friends and family. This investment not only benefits people within our service but also positively impacts the wider community, promoting understanding and inclusivity.

Your contribution will directly impact the lives of all our supported people at our Thistles Day Service and will also benefit the 30 staff members who tirelessly work to make a difference. Your support will not only revitalise the physical space but also create a nurturing environment that fosters growth, independence, and fulfilment for all involved. Making sure our facilities are as safe, calming and welcoming spaces for our supported people is more important than ever.

We would be incredibly grateful of any donations for this incredible service. Should you wish to learn more about this appeal, please get in touch with fundraising@scottishautism.org.
