Game Review 1: Fun for a while!

Katie Kearns

13 year-old Katie Kearns has a passion for all things gaming! Here she shares with us her review  of a game entitled Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Bros (Nintendo 3DS)

New and selling well, this is Nintendo’s fifth in the series of Mario and Luigi role-playing games.

Mario is a character who was introduced 32 years ago. He has featured in more than 200 games, is an Italian plumber and lives in the Mushroom Kingdom.

This latest adventure takes place in Luigi’s dreams and – not for the first time – requires Mario to rescue the kidnapped Princess Peach.

The game works really well on the 3DS. The adventures in the dream world are shown on the upper screen, while Luigi can be controlled on the lower touchscreen.

In some parts of the game, you have to control Mario and Luigi at the same time. Combat, however, is turn-based with the brothers and the various monsters taking it in turns to launch their assaults. Winning battles earns you Experience Points: these help Mario and Luigi grow in strength.

One of the things I like about this game is that it is so simple to get into without reference to the manual. The game is easy to understand and is definitely good fun.

But I would not say it is one of Nintendo’s best releases. Rather than this turn-based role-playing, I would have preferred a more traditional type of game, perhaps with a slight difference. Also, it took too long to reach the main features of the game, This was a bit frustrating.

My conclusion is that Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Bros is a good game, but no a great one. It was fun for a while, but not for long enough. Normally I return to the games many times, but not on this occasion.

KATIE’S VERDICT: 6 OUT OF 10
